Magna Cobras  54 : 64 Aztecs B

Aztecs B started their 2018/19 away campaign with an explosive overtime victory against the experienced Magna Cobras. After a balanced opening 5 minutes the Aztecs failed to convert their scoring opportunities, allowing the Cobras to open up a 13 point lead at the quarter (22:9).

An inspired change to a 1:3:1 defence restricted the home team to just 2 points in the second quarter, and contributions from Obembe (4) and Hanson (6) closed the gap to just 5 at the break (24:19).

With the team growing in confidence, the second half began with Harrap converting from distance, including 2 three pointers, and with solid defensive contributions from Robson, Johnson and Harrap the Aztecs eventually edged ahead during the final quarter. The game remained close and a final basket by Johnson took the game into overtime at 47 all.

What happened in the next 5 minutes will remain in the memories of the team for ever as the giant Obembe awoke from the slumber, rose to the challenge and exploded into action, dominating both boards, driving coast to coast on several occasions, scoring 12 points and with two further assists for Harrap ensured the Aztecs ran out comfortable 54:64 winners. Not even the technical foul (something about the men in grey not going to Specsavers) could detract from this Man of the Match performance.

With impressive cameo performances from rookies McMillan, Idowu and Garner ably supported by the more experienced Jackson and Youles, stand in Coach Hanson can report back to the otherwise indisposed Coach Kershaw that the pressure is now on to continue the teams learning, development, progression and improvement as the team seek to move up the league tables.

Aztecs Scorers : Obembe (MOTM) 20, Hanson S 19, Harrap 17, Johnson 6, Robson 2
